FREE ASSOCIATION
Disco/ Funk / SoulVintage Vinyl 12" / 15 EUR
Those with painful memories of The Free Association, the ill conceived funk rock Supergroup of the same name fronted by David Holmes, should not fret as this 12″ does not signal their return. Instead Free Association is the double A standard work of Andrew Allsgood and Alister Johnson, with this eponymous plate offering up four Balearic club jams that will appeal instantly to fans of the Black Disco operation or the much missed RVNG of the NRDS series. Indeed this record evokes that period pre-disco edits deluge where actual digging was involved, with all four tracks here pretty much a mystery to us. The A Side veers wonderfully from string heavy, low slung psyche-disco to minimal and slightly foreboding percussive workouts that sound like Serge Gainsbourg doped up in India. Our favourite cut however is “Goodie Goodie” which sounds suspiciously like a dark disco cover version of Pink Floyd.
