Context label boss and full time Belief Systems member Seth Horvitz aka Sutekh delivers this wonderful album for Sue Costabile and Joshua ‘Kit’ Claytons anything goes Orthlorng Musork label. Experimental yet organic, ‘Gospel Train’ swims in fields of drones and static but there’s a live feel and a feeling of machines falling apart. Beats are heard in the distance amongst field recordings and an earthly warmth. There is a real feeling of knowledge of the pioneers of electro-acoustic music in the hands of Sutekh and it really come out in his music. Whenever a drone sets in there are fresh sonics and samples a few seconds away. ‘Fire Weather’ hits a house groove, though it’s a realisation of how Safety Scissors would sound remixed by Fennesz. Killer. The truly beautiful ‘Privacy’ almost seems like a live improvisation, sumptuous rhodes keys resonate behind minimal static surges and a lone drummer plays a simple song before feedback breaks free towards the end of one genius track. At times recalling the tension of the finest moments of Godspeed. A mad collage artwork sleeve is also the work of Sutekh. A challenging but thoroughly rewarding listen managing to be both experimental and accessible without losing any essence of originality. Superb.
