While it’s fair to say that most of Voltaire Records output has been quietly impressive, it’s the San Francisco label’s compilations that really hit the high notes. Endeavours, their fourth such exercise, is as likeable as its’ predecessors. Loosely based around a modern boogie, synth grooves and modern funk ethos, it contains a string of highlights. These include the deep, Dam Funk style synth-boogie bounce of Harvey Sutherland’s “That’s The Fact, Jack”, the sparkling ’80s soul-goes-boogie revivalism of XL Middleton’s gorgeous “One & Only”, some vintage Bobby Konders style deep house goodness from Moon B, and a typically atmospheric chugger from Timothy J Fairplay.
