‘Naná, Nelson Angelo, Novelli’ sees Naná Vasconcelos joined by guitarist and singer-songer Nelson Angelo, and bass player Novelli, for a mesmerising meld of traditions. Following Naná’s foundational couple of solo albums in the early ‘70s, ‘Africadeus’ and ‘Amazons’, these 1975 trio recordings would predate his seminal works with Don Cherry in Codona, and his (recently reissued) ‘Saudades’ (ECM, 1979), setting a loose but distinctive template for weaving his signature berimbau - a single stringed instrument closely associated with Brazilian martial art of capoeira - into jazz-fusion forms.
