Junior Loves
Redriff/Piper 32
Killer darkside UK steppers mutations by a regular apparition of John T. Gast’s 5 Gate Temple
On their best yet, Junior Loves channels a clear passion for that classic strain of rolling steppers pressure unique to UK with a finer grasp of emotional keyboard chops in balance with propulsive subs and Casio clack. ‘Redriff’ is the big one, possibly betraying links to Cornish town Redruth in its title and summoning a sort of Brixton-via-beach party momentum in its wicked night vision synth hook and restlessly rude drive. ‘Piper 32’ follows in that vein with pumping subs and etheric melodica cloaked in Mark Snow-type pads like a voodoo X-File theme, and ’End Cut’ eases off the gas lower the bass to worm-charming levels, hingeing around an ace harpsichord motif.
