From early beginnings building and fixing soundsystems and his own instruments, he found himself working as King Tubby's protege at Drumalie Avenue Studios in Kingston where he would elaborate upon the techniques developed by his bossman, effectively defining the sound of dub for decades to come thanks to a clinical, boundary-pushing feel for sound at its elemental level. 'Introducing Scientist: the best dub album in the world' earns its title in style, pushing every sound to its limit within the sonic spectrum, creating a sensurreal, psychedelic experience at once leavened and amplified by some of the deadliest rhythms ever laid down in that classic, Jamaican Afro-futurist fashion.
- There are two cuts worth the admission alone: 'Steppers Dub' is one of the finest of its kind, a driving dancefloor weapon urged by plunging bass guitar hook and pointillist drums under pressure of space and time-warping FX which dissolve and resolve the riddim with an instinctive, ghostly logic, laying a template for the finest jungle, techno, dubstep and beyond; the other is 'Scientific Dub', an ostensibly jollier number which has been gutted and resculpted as a swirling duppy body of 3D FX comtrails, accentuating each drum, guitar lick and motorised bassline with almost fierce tension. Seriously, they don't come much better than this. Essential.
