Talk: Selected Electronics From Y2k South Korea
Roving dance music reissue label Betonska excavate a surprising set of acid, electro-punk, and downbeat aces from Y2K South Korea after previously sifting out early Manc rave and Scouse dance-pop gems
‘Talk: Selected Electronics from Y2K South Korea’ hails the work of Jin Won Lee aka Gazaebel, a DJ and producer who worked in NYC studios with the likes of Janet Jackson and Wu Tang Clan in the ‘90s, and whose bonds extend to chart-topping K-Pop and media art. The six tracks speak to the breadth of Lee’s catalogue, pulling from various releases to showcase a style that scales from Plastikman-esque downbeat acid on ‘Another One’, thru the effortless acid techno momentum of ‘Square’, to scuzzier electro-punk recalling ATR and Mad Capsule Markets on ‘Talk’, and decelerated acidic drug chug on ‘Gilda’.
Netherlands-based Korean producer Nawon Ha, aka Naone, is commissioned for the exclusive remix of ‘And So On’, handing in a remix of a track that was unavailable to license in its original form, but here uncoiling as a stripe of reticulated downbeat acid that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Vladimir Ivkovic set.
