Open Our Eyes was the first EWF album which was driven by a new production philosophy that was to last until, say, 1980’s Faces. It’s an eclectic combination of contemporary Street Funk, Ballads with harmony vocals, Latin influenced percussion, Jazz improvisations, West coast Hippie influences complete with consciousness raising lyrics, last not least the best possible sound engineering, yet here still without strings and brass like on the following albums. All this was amalgamated on this LP to formerly unheard of perfection. The intellectual, spiritual and political development in the States during the 60s blossomed in early 70s music, and Open Our Eyes is a very fine example of that. The philosophical or spiritual basis and the leadership of Maurice White was responsible for the incredible success EWF was to gain during the 70s.
