With a title like Distant Travel Companion, we imagine you might already be able to tell what kind of music can be found on Satoshi Suzuki’s 1980s city pop opus. Something of a utilitarian pop music pocket-guide to traversing Japan by train, the LP’s genre blend was first described on the original obi strip in purely metricized terms – “40% Jazz, 30% Soul, 20% Brazil, and 10% Kayokyoku!” Innocent and sparse in sound, Suzuki deploys a charming combo of effusive sounds, in one breath sounding like the bare minimum required for making music like this, but in another, sounding like far more than the sum of its skeletal, analogic parts, and all brought together by his frank vocal performances. Now remastered from its original, “impossibly limited” edition pressing of just 100 copies, we’re extremely excited to reintroduce this lo-fi slice-of-life to your ears.
